International Hunger Relief Ramadan 2022: Refugees in Greece

The ongoing crisis of worldwide hunger is a concern all year round, but it’s particularly poignant during the month of Ramadan. An important tradition of Ramadan is fasting, abstaining from eating and drinking to provide space for self-reflection. Anyone who refrains from eating for most of their day can understand what it means to be hungry, how a lack of food can drain physical energy and mental spirit. For millions around the world, this is a daily, unavoidable reality. One place where hunger is rampant is among the refugee population located in Greece.

The refugee population of Greece

UNICEF estimates that nearly 120,000 people are seeking asylum in Greece and the Greek islands, more than 25 percent of whom (31,700) are children. These are mainly people of a variety of backgrounds – including doctors, lawyers, and other professionals – who have fled their countries of origin due to conflict, looking to forge a new, brighter future while lacking money and other possessions. The journey to Greece can be incredibly hazardous, and potentially deadly, and is often undertaken by single mothers with children in tow. For those who have been able to settle in Greek towns and cities as they await word of their status, evidence shows hostility towards the migrant and refugee population in the country, in the form of rising incidences of violence and in passive discrimination. But often, as soon as migrants arrive in Greece, they are forced into overcrowded, unsanitary and unsafe camps. These living conditions have a significant impact on the physical and mental health of the people living there, and the International Rescue Committee reports that some 40 percent of people living in these camps do not have enough food, including a “worryingly high” number of children.
