International Hunger Relief Ramadan 2022: Families in the U.S.

The ongoing crisis of worldwide hunger is a concern all year round, but it’s particularly poignant during the month of Ramadan. An important tradition of Ramadan is fasting, abstaining from eating and drinking to provide space for self-reflection. Anyone who refrains from eating for most of their day can understand what it means to be hungry, how a lack of food can drain physical energy and mental spirit. For millions around the world, this is a daily, unavoidable reality. Here in the United States, the richest country in the world, the crisis of hunger still touches millions of families.

Hunger in the United States

One in 10 Americans is food insecure, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That number represents 38 million people in this country – only slightly less than the populations of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania combined – who cannot afford food or who do not live in an area with easy access to food. Food insecurity is higher than average among Black and Hispanic people, and is especially noted among households with children: an estimated 13-15 million children live in households that lack access to enough food. One in four single mothers is food-insecure, as is one-sixth of all U.S. households with children. And after years of declining rates of hunger in the U.S. the COVID-19 pandemic is responsible for an uptick since 2020, thanks in part to widespread school and business closures that have increased the role played by nonprofit organizations like Embrace Relief.
