Have Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions About Cataracts

A cataract is when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, making vision blurry or dim. Cataract surgery removes and replaces this cloudy lens with an artificial one (called an IOL), restoring clear sight. Surgery is the only definitive treatment for cataract-related vision loss.
2. How safe is cataract surgery?
Cataract removal is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures, with over a 90% success rate. Complications like infection, swelling, or retinal issues are rare and generally treatable.
3. What types of cataract surgery are available?

The main types are:

  • Phacoemulsification (common in developed regions)
  • Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS), cost-effective and widely used in low-resource areas
  • Extracapsular and intracapsular techniques (less common).
4. What is the recovery time after cataract surgery?
Patients usually notice vision imrovements within 24 and 48 hours. Full recovery, including wound healing and final vision clarity, typically takes a few weeks.
5. How can I support a cataract surgery charity?

You can:

  • Donate to cover the full cost of a surgery (USD 120)
  • Sponsor medical equipment or clinic outreach
  • Volunteer (e.g., trained ophthalmologists)
  • Spread awareness and support ongoing programs.
