Yemen Will Not Wait
Since 2015, the Yemeni Civil War has taken the lives of tens of thousands of lives. Violence is estimated to have killed an estimated 17,729 civilians. However, an ongoing famine, instigated and maintained by the conflict, remain the most dire threat faced by non-combatants. This famine has resulted in the deaths of over 50,000 children. Worse yet, the civil war shows no signs of abatement.
Between estimates from Unicef and the UNHCR, roughly 24 million Yemeni, including 11.3 million children, face imminent starvation. Coupled with poor quality water, malnourished people are at greater risk of succumbing to cholera and diarrhea. The first three months of 2019 saw the emergence of nearly 109,000 suspected cases of those two aforementioned diseases. Complicating matters, these conditions have led to the displacement of 3.3 million people, the effects of which include reduced access to healthcare.
Women and girls face even greater obstacles, such as increased risk of violence, exploitation, abuse and diminished access to basic healthcare services.
Clearly, the Yemeni population needs immediate humanitarian aid from the international community.
