Bringing Joy to Orphaned Children: How Embrace Relief is Making Summer Magical

Summary

  • Unlike children with families, orphaned children often experience summer as a time of loneliness and missed opportunities, deepening their sense of isolation and sadness.
  • Embrace Relief organized a holiday program in Indonesia and Congo, providing orphaned children with joyful experiences like visits to amusement parks, dining in restaurants, and exploring new places.
  • These activities promote emotional healing, social interaction, and exposure to new experiences, all of which are crucial for the children’s emotional and cognitive development.
  • Embrace Relief plans to expand this program to Colombia, Ghana, and Tanzania, and encourages public support to continue bringing happiness to orphaned children worldwide.

Putting Smiles on Children’s Faces

Summer is a time of joy and excitement for most children—a season filled, for many, with countless happy memories made on family vacations, trips to amusement parks, and other joyous times. But for orphaned children, summer can often be a stark reminder of what they don’t have: the loving embrace of parents who plan special outings, the excitement of exploring new places, and the simple pleasure of a carefree holiday. While other children are eagerly packing for family getaways, many orphaned children face the long, lonely months of summer with little to look forward to.

For many orphaned children, summer is not a time of excitement but a period of deepening sadness. Without the presence of a family to plan and provide for them, these children often miss out on the joyful experiences that define the season. The gap between their reality and that of children with families is stark, leaving them feeling even more isolated and forgotten. As other children return to school with stories of their summer adventures, orphaned children are left with little to share, their hearts heavy with the weight of missed opportunities and unfulfilled dreams.

The emotional toll of missing out on summer experiences can be profound. Seeing other children enjoy their holidays deepens the sense of abandonment and loss that many orphaned children already feel. The lack of positive experiences during the summer can leave them feeling disconnected from their peers and deprived of the joy that comes so naturally to other children. It’s in this context that Embrace Relief steps in, determined to fill this gap and provide the happiness these children deserve.

The Benefits of Holidays for Orphaned Children

World Sight Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a call to action for individuals, organizations, and governments worldwide. The importance of this day lies in its ability to:

  • Emotional Healing: One of the most significant benefits of providing holiday experiences for orphaned children is the emotional healing it brings. Joyful outings, whether to parks, cinemas, or amusement centers, offer these children a respite from their everyday struggles. They help to heal the wounds of the past, providing a sense of normalcy and happiness that can transform their outlook on life. Positive memories created during these experiences build resilience, giving children the hope and strength they need to face the challenges ahead.
  • Social Interaction and Integration: Holidays are not just about fun—they’re also an essential opportunity for social interaction and integration. Group activities help orphaned children develop vital social skills, fostering friendships and a sense of belonging that can be life-changing. These outings break the cycle of isolation, allowing children to connect with others in a meaningful way. The shared experiences create bonds that can last long after the summer ends, providing a support network that helps them feel less alone. These activities align with early childhood education and early childhood development principles, promoting social and emotional growth.
  • Exposure to New Experiences: For many orphaned children, holidays provide their first exposure to new and exciting environments. Visiting a cinema, dining in a restaurant, or exploring an amusement park broadens their horizons, sparking curiosity and enhancing cognitive development. These experiences are more than just a day of fun—they’re an opportunity for children to dream bigger, to see a world beyond their immediate surroundings, and to develop the confidence to pursue those dreams. These outings are a critical part of improving access to education and personal growth, helping to combat the poor education and lack of education that many of these children face daily.
The Benefits of Holidays for Orphaned Children

Embrace Relief’s Impact: Bringing Joy to Orphaned Children

As part of the “Raise the Children” program, Embrace Relief, in collaboration with local partners, successfully organized a special holiday program for orphaned children in Indonesia and Congo this summer. The goal was to provide these children with joyful experiences and cherished memories. Here are the key activities that were part of this memorable holiday:

  • Exciting Visits to Amusement Parks: The children were taken to amusement parks where they enjoyed a variety of thrilling rides and attractions. For many, it was their first time experiencing such fun and excitement. The day was filled with laughter and joy as they explored the park and relished in the freedom of being kids, free from worries and full of happiness.
  • Dining Experiences at Local Restaurants: The children were treated to meals at local restaurants, giving them the opportunity to try new foods and enjoy a dining experience in a social setting. These meals were about more than just eating—they were about bonding, sharing stories, and feeling a sense of belonging in a community that cares deeply for them. These experiences are also crucial in supporting their early childhood development, providing them with new environments that contribute to their growth.
  • Exploring New Places: The program also included visits to various cultural and historical sites. These outings allowed the children to explore new places, learn about their heritage, and broaden their understanding of the world around them. The experiences were educational and fun, offering the children a chance to see beyond their immediate surroundings and inspiring them to dream bigger.

Building on the success of this summer’s program in Indonesia and Congo, Embrace Relief is eager to expand the holiday program to reach more orphaned children around the world. We are planning to organize similar activities in Colombia, Ghana, and Tanzania, bringing the joy and happiness of these experiences to even more children who deserve a bright and carefree holiday..

Join us in making a difference! Your support can help us continue to provide these joyful experiences for orphaned children around the world. Whether through a donation or by spreading the word about our work, you can make a significant difference in the lives of these children.

  • Approximately 2.2 billion people have a form of vision impairment, and 1 billion of these cases could have been prevented or have yet to be treated.
  • World Sight Day is dedicated to bringing awareness to eye health and the critical issue of global blindness, with the goal of mobilizing resources and funding to improve eye health access, increasing funding for research, and informing people on how to protect and care for their eyes.
  • Learn how you can support expanding access to quality eye care to those in need through Embrace Relief’s Cure Cataract program.

Each year, on the second Thursday of October, the world comes together to observe World Sight Day. In 2024, World Sight Day will take place on Oct. 10. This global event is dedicated to drawing attention to the critical issue of visual impairment and blindness. World Sight Day serves as a reminder of the importance of eye health and the need for accessible eye care services for all. As a nonprofit committed to addressing preventable and fixable blindness and vision impairment, Embrace Relief is proud to be part of this movement, advocating for a world where everyone can enjoy the gift of sight.

The History of World Sight Day

World Sight Day was established by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). The first official World Sight Day was celebrated in 2000, as part of the VISION 2020: The Right to Sight initiative. This initiative, launched in 1999, aims to eliminate avoidable blindness through a global effort to increase awareness, mobilize resources, and implement effective strategies for eye care.

The theme for World Sight Day changes annually, focusing on different aspects of eye health and visual impairment, emphasizing the universal right to eye care and the importance of reaching underserved communities. The theme for World Sight Day 2024 is “Love Your Eyes Kids,” whose goals are to increase awareness around childhood blindness and eye health, provide services for visually impaired children in and out of school, and create a generation of health-conscious individuals who love their eyes and eye health.

Why World Sight Day Matters

World Sight Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a call to action for individuals, organizations, and governments worldwide. The importance of this day lies in its ability to:

  1. Raise Awareness: Visual impairment and blindness affect millions of people globally. According to the WHO, at least 2.2 billion people have a vision impairment, and at least 1 billion of these cases could have been prevented or have yet to be addressed. World Sight Day raises awareness about the prevalence of eye diseases and the importance of regular eye exams and early intervention.
  2. Promote Preventive Care: Many eye conditions, such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, can be managed or even prevented with timely medical intervention. World Sight Day encourages people to prioritize their eye health and seek regular checkups, reducing the risk of severe visual impairment.
  3. Highlight the Impact of Visual Impairment: Visual impairment has far-reaching consequences, affecting not only individuals but also their families and communities. It can lead to decreased quality of life, reduced economic opportunities, and increased dependency. By highlighting these impacts, World Sight Day advocates for improved access to eye care services and support for those affected by vision loss.
  4. Mobilize Resources and Support: World Sight Day serves as a platform to mobilize resources and garner support for eye health initiatives. It encourages collaboration between governments, NGOs, healthcare providers, and the private sector to invest in eye care infrastructure, research, and education.
Embrace Relief's Zakat Program

Our Commitment to Vision for All

Embrace Relief is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by visual impairment. We achieve this goal through our programs, which provide free cataract surgeries and comprehensive health checkups, including eye exams, to underserved communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, yet they are treatable with a simple surgical procedure. By sponsoring cataract surgeries, we restore sight and hope to individuals who would otherwise remain in darkness.

Our efforts extend beyond surgeries. With our teams in the field, we conduct eye health education campaigns to inform communities about the importance of eye care and the availability of services. We work with local and global partners to facilitate the import of much-needed medical supplies and equipment to the regions we serve, thus, strengthening healthcare systems and infrastructure.

How to Pay Zakat?

Embrace Relief’s Zakat Program

Paying Zakat is a crucial aspect of a Muslim’s faith and practice, representing a means of purifying one’s wealth and redistributing it to benefit those in need. Understanding how to properly calculate and distribute Zakat ensures that this charitable act is both meaningful and impactful.

Steps to Pay Zakat

1. Determine Your Nisab

The first step in paying Zakat is determining whether your wealth meets or exceeds the nisab, the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must have before being obliged to give Zakat. The nisab is equivalent to the current value of 87.48 grams of gold. As of August 2024, this is roughly $5,300.

2. Calculate Your Zakat

Zakat is calculated at 2.5% of your total savings and wealth that has been in your possession for a full lunar year. This includes cash, savings, investments, gold, silver, and other assets. Embrace Relief provides a handy Zakat calculator on their website to help you accurately determine the amount you owe.

3. Identify Eligible Recipients

Zakat must be distributed to specific categories of recipients, including the poor, the needy, those in debt, and others as defined by Islamic law. Your donation can support various causes that align with these categories, ensuring your Zakat reaches those who need it most.

Embrace Relief’s Zakat Program

When you choose to give your Zakat through Embrace Relief, you have the opportunity to support a variety of vital causes that provide life-saving assistance to people in need around the world. Here are some of the key initiatives your Zakat can support:

1. Clean Water

Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet millions of people around the world still lack this basic necessity. Your Zakat can help fund the construction of water wells and provide clean drinking water to communities in need.

2. Health – Cataract Surgeries

Cataracts are a leading cause of blindness, particularly in developing countries where access to medical care is limited. Your Zakat donations can fund cataract surgeries, restoring sight and improving the quality of life for individuals suffering from this condition.

3. Raise the Children

Embrace Relief’s “Raise the Children” program provides essential support to orphaned and vulnerable children, ensuring they have access to education, healthcare, and a safe environment. Your Zakat can make a profound difference in the lives of these children, giving them the opportunity to thrive.

5 Everyday Ways To Conserve Water

Summary

  • Water is a precious resource, and one we must be mindful of preserving so that we can all drink, cook, clean and grow our food sustainably.
  • Learn 5 tips for how you can use less water in your everyday life. When we all strive to take these steps, we can save vast amounts of water together.
  • Then, learn how you can join Embrace Relief in helping fight water scarcity around the world by building water wells.

Water is a precious resource, and conserving it is crucial for the environment and future generations. Here are five simple yet effective ways to save water in your daily life.

1. Fix Leaks Promptly

Leaky faucets and pipes can waste a significant amount of water. A dripping tap can waste up to 3,000 gallons of water a year. Check all your faucets, showerheads, and toilets regularly for leaks and fix them immediately. Replacing worn-out washers and gaskets can often solve the problem. If you’re unsure how to fix a leak, consider hiring a plumber to prevent further water wastage.

2. Install Water-Saving Fixtures

Modern fixtures are designed to use less water without compromising performance. Consider installing low-flow showerheads, faucets, and dual-flush toilets. These fixtures can reduce your water usage by up to 50%. Aerators for faucets are another excellent investment, as they mix air with water, reducing the flow while maintaining pressure. Look for the products with the WaterSense label: these have been certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as meeting water efficiency standards.

3. Practice Smart Landscaping

For many homeowners, the most significant portion of their water consumption comes from outdoor use, such as watering the grass. While we all want our lawns to look bright and green, it’s also important to consider alternative options that will use less water while still maintaining a pleasant, natural appearance to our homes. Try some “Xeriscaping” ideas to beautify your home while saving water: these include

  • Choosing drought-resistant plants that are native to your geographic area, which require less water to remain alive.
  • Plant more shrubs, trees and ground cover to reduce the square footage of grass that needs regular watering.
  • Use mulch around trees and in flower beds to help retain moisture.
  • Group plants with similar water needs together.
  • Use a drip irrigation system, rather than a sprinkler system, to deliver water directly to your plant’s roots.
  • Water your grass earlier in the morning or later at night to minimize water loss due to evaporation.

4. Use Appliances Efficiently

Household appliances like dishwashers and washing machines are significant water users. To maximize efficiency, always run these appliances with full loads. Select water-saving modes if available, and consider upgrading to energy-efficient models that use less water and energy.

When hand-washing dishes, fill one basin with soapy water and another with rinse water instead of letting the tap run. Similarly, when washing clothes, match the water level to the size of the load.

5. Adopt Water-Saving Habits

Water is so easily accessible for most of us in America, and so it can be very easy to take our abundance of water for granted. It can be easy to imagine that if one person wastes a little bit of water, it’s no big deal. But this water waste adds up, and can have a real impact on the water supply, especially in regions going through drought.

You can do your part by being aware of how much water you use in your everyday habits, and to make sure you are only as much water as you need. Simple changes in daily habits, like these, can make a big difference in water conservation:

  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Take shorter showers; aim for five minutes or less.
  • When rinsing fruits and vegetables, use a bowl of water instead of running tap water, and then use the leftover water for plants.
  • Collect rainwater for outdoor use by installing rain barrels, which can be used for watering your garden and lawn.

Bonus tip: Take notes each time you use water during the day. You might be surprised how much you use – and you might be able to brainstorm ideas to reduce your usage. It can make a real difference!

Make An Even Greater Impact on Water Scarcity with Embrace Relief!

Make An Even Greater Impact on Water Scarcity with Embrace Relief!

For many people around the world, managing water consumption isn’t just helpful: it’s necessary to survive. More than 250 million people in sub-Saharan Africa live every day with water scarcity – that is, without an easily accessible, safe-to-consume source of drinking water. Many must walk several miles each day to reach their nearest water source; others must fetch their water from unprotected lakes, rivers, and watering holes, where it may be contaminated with waste or dangerous bacteria.

That’s why Embrace Relief works to build water wells in Africa. To date, we have built or reconstructed more than 900 water wells, expanding access to clean drinking water to more than 950,000 people. When water is abundant, we no longer have to worry about having enough to drink, to grow our food, to clean ourselves, or to do any of the daily tasks that help us stay happy, healthy and productive. That’s the impact that Embrace Relief has made, thanks to generous donors like you!

Be a part of Embrace Relief’s Clean Water Initiative and donate using the box below to help us make clean water a reality for even more communities in Africa.

Or, if you want to make an even bigger impact this holiday season, click here to build your very own water well project! Our wells cost just $3,500, and a donation of this amount entitles you to name your well, leaving a legacy of compassion and hope for years to come.

Dr. Umut Duygu Uzunel to Conduct Groundbreaking Cataract Surgeries at New Mobile Clinic in Burkina Faso

Despite living with muscular dystrophy (MD), a degenerative disease of the muscles that decreases strength and mobility, Dr. Umut Duygu Uzunel remains committed to her volunteer work. Although she primarily uses a wheelchair now because of her MD, she has made the selfless decision to dedicate these years of mobility to helping others around the world. To date, Dr. Uzunel, a distinguished eye doctor and naturopath, has performed 10,000+ cataract surgeries, with 4,000 being completely free of charge during medical volunteer trips.

We are excited to announce that Dr. Uzunel’s next medical volunteer trip will be to Burkina Faso. There, she aims to complete 200 free cataract surgeries at the grand opening of Embrace Relief’s new mobile health clinic.

This project is in collaboration with the Burkina Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ensuring sustainability and integration into the existing healthcare framework, paving the way for continued improvement in eye health services in Burkina Faso.

The appointment of Dr. Uzunel marks an important milestone for Embrace Relief’s new mobile health clinic, which will aim to bring essential eye health services directly to the people of Burkina Faso. This clinic will address the significant barriers – such as distance, affordability, and limited healthcare infrastructure – that have prevented millions of Burkinabe people from access to care. Embrace Relief’s mobile clinic will provide a variety of free-at-point-of-service care, including eye surgeries, particularly cataract surgeries; free comprehensive preventative health screenings; basic dental procedures; and the distribution of medications such as general antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and eye drops, to those who need them.

About Dr. Umut Duygu Uzunel

Dr. Uzunel is a licensed and board-certified naturopathic doctor based in Ontario, Canada. A graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, she is registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO) and is a member of both the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND) and the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors (OAND). Originally from Turkey, Dr. Uzunel brings a wealth of expertise and experience as a physician and eye surgeon to Embrace Relief’s mobile health clinic in Burkina Faso.

In addition to her expertise in eye diseases, Dr. Uzunel focuses on mental health, pain management, chronic diseases, and digestive and neurological disorders. She has a personal understanding of supporting disabled individuals, as she has muscular dystrophy. Dr. Uzunel is also a professional coach, adept at helping clients find motivation and achieve life goals. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in psychology at Yorkville University, enhancing her ability to understand and support her clients’ mental health.

Dr Umut Duygu Uzunel

Dr. Uzunel has dedicated her life and career to helping others. She has been on numerous humanitarian medical trips to countries like Kenya and Uganda, where she has completed more than 4,000 eye surgeries. This year, she will embark on a humanitarian medical trip to Burkina Faso, where she will perform the very first cataract surgeries at the opening of Embrace Relief’s new Mobile Health Clinic.

The Situation in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso ranks 184 out of 191 on the Human Development Index and faces significant healthcare access and medical infrastructure challenges. Access to eye health services in Burkina Faso is severely limited, with substantial barriers preventing many individuals from receiving necessary care. The country has a dire shortage of ophthalmologists, with only about one ophthalmologist for every million people, far below the recommended ratio. Additionally, there are only a few specialized eye clinics, primarily concentrated in urban areas like Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso, leaving rural populations without adequate access to eye care.

Several factors contribute to this lack of access, including economic constraints, which are a major issue as many people cannot afford the cost of eye surgeries or even basic consultations. Additionally, the overall healthcare infrastructure is underdeveloped, with insufficient funding, a lack of trained healthcare professionals, and inadequate medical supplies and equipment, which are exacerbating this situation. Cultural factors and lack of eye health education also play a role, as many people do not seek care until their condition becomes severe.

The Situation in Burkina Faso

According to a study by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), the prevalence of cataracts, a leading cause of blindness, is exceptionally high in Burkina Faso. Approximately 2.2% of the population (nearly 500,000 people) is affected by cataracts, but only a fraction of these individuals receive the surgery needed to restore their vision. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that only about 20% of people in need of eye care services actually receive them, highlighting the vast unmet need in the country. This lack of access results in preventable blindness and vision impairment, significantly impacting the quality of life and economic productivity of those affected.

Impact of the New Mobile Health Clinic

The introduction of Embrace Relief’s mobile health clinic aims to bridge this gap in healthcare services. This mobile clinic will bring essential eye health services directly to people, overcoming the significant barriers of distance, cost, and limited healthcare infrastructure that have long hindered access to eye care. The mobile clinic will provide free eye surgeries, particularly cataract surgeries, to those who would otherwise have no access to such treatments. Moreover, the clinic will provide free comprehensive health screenings and basic dental procedures and distribute medications, such as general antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and eye drops, as needed.

This initiative will improve the quality of life for individuals by restoring their sight and have broader socio-economic benefits for the community. Restored vision enables individuals to return to work, support their families, and actively participate in their communities, thereby boosting economic productivity and reducing poverty levels. The presence of the mobile health clinic will also raise awareness about the importance of eye health and encourage more people to seek medical care.

The mobile health clinic represents a beacon of hope for many in Burkina Faso, offering not only immediate medical relief but also long-term improvements in health and quality of life. By addressing a critical health issue like cataracts, the clinic will help restore vision and independence to many individuals, empowering them to lead more productive and fulfilling lives.

Dr. Uzunel’s participation in this groundbreaking initiative highlights the global effort to improve healthcare access in underserved regions. Embrace Relief, in partnership with local authorities, is committed to making a lasting positive impact on the lives of many in Burkina Faso. Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring project as Dr. Uzunel and the Embrace Relief team work to bring vision and hope to those in need.

Be sure to check out Dr. Uzunel’s Instagram to follow her travels and visit her website for more information.

1. Fresh Fruit

Fresh fruits like watermelon, grapes, and berries are hydrating and refreshing, perfect for a hot day at the beach. They’re easy to pack and can be enjoyed as a quick snack.

2. Sandwiches

Sandwiches are a classic beach food. They’re easy to make and pack, and you can fill them with your favorite ingredients. Opt for hearty breads and fillings that won’t get soggy, like turkey, cheese, and lettuce.

3. Veggie Sticks and Hummus

Crunchy veggie sticks like carrots, celery, and bell peppers paired with hummus make a healthy and satisfying snack. They’re easy to transport and won’t spoil quickly in the sun.

4. Nuts and Trail Mix

Embrace Relief’s Yemen Food Distribution Campaign

Embrace Relief is working tirelessly to alleviate hunger in Yemen through our Yemen Food Distribution campaign. With a $50 donation, we are able to provide a food package filled with essential items that will last a Yemeni family for a full week. These packages include staple foods such as rice, flour, sugar, beans, and oil, which are crucial for the survival of families in crisis.
