Columbus Refugee Relief Fund 2020

Every day, the refugee crisis happening around the world becomes more and more dire. Thousands of refugees are seeking asylum, specifically Turkish refugees fleeing to Greece to seek safety and refuge. These refugees flee from violence, war, political, and religious persecution. They have no choice but to uproot their lives and relocate in hopes of finding a better life and future for their children and family. These refugees are in critical need of assistance and help to learn a completely new way of life in order to not only survive, but to also thrive.

Right now, there are thousands of displaced families fleeing from Turkey to Greece. Upon arrival, they are put into refugee camps for a few weeks. After this, they often displaced again with nowhere to go. The thought of not having a place to call “home” breaks their hearts, as it does ours. Together with our partner Turkish American Society of Ohio-Columbus (TASO), Embrace Relief is calling upon those who have a humanitarian spirit to help provide emergency housing. This housing is often temporary because the refugees flee to other European countries.

The number of displaced refugee families rises every single day and is expected to increase in the coming months. Refugees arrive in Greece with nothing and face the daunting task of finding a place to stay. Furthermore, available jobs are scarce and often impossible to come by, so it is difficult for families to save money or gain capital.

Due to the gracious donors and volunteers, we are able to provide emergency housing, food, healthcare, financial, psychological, and legal support to those who need it most. We now offer English courses to these Turkish refugees through our English Language Conversational Partnerships program. Many want to learn English because it is a prominent language in Europe and around the world, just in case they want or have to migrate to a different country.

End of Year Giving 2020: Feed the Future Generation this Holiday Season!

We know that this year has been full of surprises. We didn’t expect to be hit by a pandemic and be on lockdown for more than half of 2020. And despite this unprecedented time, we still all came together as one to help people in need who were greatly affected by the coronavirus. We showed that no matter what challenges come our way, we will always be united to help one another.

As the holiday season is coming, we want to start a campaign focusing on the people who are always excited the most about the holidays, the children. Children are one of the most affected populations of this pandemic. Especially children in the vulnerable areas of the world, they don’t have the privilege of having easy access to clean water and hygienic supplies which are crucial to combat the coronavirus, nor the luxury of having three or more meals in a day. They had to adapt to this new challenging norm on top of already having their everyday struggle.

We want to reach children in the most vulnerable areas and provide them with one of the most essential necessities, FOOD. According to Our World in Data, 22% of children younger than five are ‘stunted’ – they are significantly shorter than the average for their age, as a consequence of poor nutrition or repeated infection. In addition, Food For Life stated that 1 in 6 children (100 million) in developing nations is underweight and 1 in 4 of the world’s children are stunted. And across the globe, 50.5 million children are estimated to be underweight for their height.

With your holiday spirit and generosity, we are planning to send food packages to children in Greece, Yemen, Tanzania, Congo, Kenya, and Uganda. You can also make these children happy for a year by supporting their orphanages with monthly donations. We are kindly asking for your help to make these children feel that they are remembered and seen this holiday season.

Water well project Volunteer

Spring of Ocean Island

Before the end of March, the Spring of Ocean Island Group FUNdraising project was able to reach their goal of $4500 to open a water well in Cameroon, Africa. They decided to name their water well “Plenty of Hope” because it will surely give hope to thousands of people in Cameroon as they are going to provide easy access to clean water.

Most of the money that was raised for their Group FUNdraiser was from sharing their webage’s link with the people they know. They also distributed posters and a penny bank in a local store. In addition, they also sold food to add more to their donations.

Most of their donors were their friends, families, relatives, teachers, etc. To promote their project on a larger scale, they also created a social media account and printed out flyers and brochures.

It was really challenging for their group to reach their FUNdraising goal in some ways. They imagined that they would sell more things to earn money but because of the pandemic, they could only sell food once. The only way they could share their project was online.

When they found out that they have reached their Group FUNdraising goal they felt so delighted, grateful, and fulfilled. They were so happy to know that they had accomplished their goal and that there is going to be a water well in Africa that they helped build.

The most memorable part of their experience was when they were able to spend time together while distributing the posters because that was the only time they could do something physically for their project. And the most rewarding part was to know they did something for the people in Cameroon. One of their group members, Dilara Ozdemir, also shared, “It is hard to sit and do daily responsibilities while you know people are suffering somewhere around the world and being able to accomplish something in order to help them was the most rewarding part”.
