Yemen Will Not Wait

Since 2015, the Yemeni Civil War has taken the lives of tens of thousands of lives. Violence is estimated to have killed an estimated 17,729 civilians. However, an ongoing famine, instigated and maintained by the conflict, remain the most dire threat faced by non-combatants. This famine has resulted in the deaths of over 50,000 children. Worse yet, the civil war shows no signs of abatement. Between estimates from Unicef and the UNHCR, roughly 24 million Yemeni, including 11.3 million children, face imminent starvation. Coupled with poor quality water, malnourished people are at greater risk of succumbing to cholera and diarrhea. The first three months of 2019 saw the emergence of nearly 109,000 suspected cases of those two aforementioned diseases. Complicating matters, these conditions have led to the displacement of 3.3 million people, the effects of which include reduced access to healthcare. Women and girls face even greater obstacles, such as increased risk of violence, exploitation, abuse and diminished access to basic healthcare services. Clearly, the Yemeni population needs immediate humanitarian aid from the international community. And you can help them. Help us meet our goal of feeding families by donating to our International Hunger Relief campaign. Your contribution will help feed families and bolster them against famine and disease. Refugees in Greece

For many refugees, Greece represented their last, best hope of safety and starting over. Approximately 50,000 refugees currently reside in camps across the country, awaiting approval of their asylum cases. Due to a host of factors beyond their control, refugees can expect to remain in those camps – where refugees face less than ideal conditions, such as overcrowding, poor sanitation, all manner of violence and deprivation of food, clean water and financial resources – for the foreseeable future. Embrace Relief has launched several successful campaigns to boost morale and deliver financial assistance to refugees in Greece. One such is their Adopt A Family campaign, which provides monthly stipends with the goal of establishing a measure of independence. Knowing that refugees have often been subjected to extensive trauma and duress, Embrace Relief offers counseling for those in need. The organization’s ultimate objective is to reduce the overall camp population and help refugees assimilate into the mainland. The monthly stipends may enable them to relocate. Through Embrace Relief, donors have fed many refugee families. All of which go a long way toward meeting the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goals 1, 2, 3 and 6: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health/Well-Being and Clean Water and Sanitation, respectively. Nonetheless, the refugee crisis continues, and consequently Embrace Relief’s efforts, remain ongoing. Besides its Adopt A Family program, Embrace Relief hopes to donate at least 1,000 food packs to refugees this spring. But the organization cannot do that without your help. The Hanna Water Well

“What makes the desert beautiful,” said the Little Prince, “Is that somewhere it hides a well.”
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

This well is constructed in honor of the ongoing work of Drs. Wahid Hanna and his wife Samia Hanna and each of the staff of Hanna Cancer Associates.

Dr. Hanna is a hematologist/oncologist practicing in Tennessee for more than 35 years. He has been the tool by which God has answered countless prayers for loved ones and family members throughout the region. His keen intellect combined with the genuine kindness shown to every patient makes him a unique treasure in the community.

Some of those whose lives he has touched wish to honor his ongoing work by providing this water well to people in need. It is our prayer that those drinking from this well will find the water as nourishing and refreshing as Dr. Hanna’s kindness and expertise have been to his patients.

A Welcome Sight

Prior to lapsing into darkness two years ago, Djoulde Sow and her husband herded cattle in a small village in Mali. In addition, they have a young son to care for. After she developed cataracts, she could no longer walk, wash or work alone. She could no longer see the faces of her son and husband. In short, life became intolerable.

Her condition is sadly common in Sub-Saharan Africa, where a host of environmental and man-made conditions, such as an absence of medical professionals, contribute to 6 million of the region’s inhabitants developing cataracts. This affliction is debilitating but entirely treatable.

Earlier this year, Djoulde left her village in search of a solution, one which Embrace Relief provided. By operating a mobile clinic to reach remote locations, the organization has conducted over 2,100 cataracts surgeries and 21,000 health screenings, restoring independence in addition to sight. Thus, Embrace Relief has aligned itself with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being. With a simple procedure funded by Embrace Relief’s generous donors, Djoulde’s life became livable again. Additionally, she regained life’s greatest gifts: The sight of her family, employability and the opportunity for happiness.

You can help someone today by donating to our cataracts campaign.  Your contribution will enable Djoulde – and others like her – to reclaim their lives.
