Last November 11, 2020 at 10:30 p.m., Typhoon Ulysses (Vamco) made landfall in Patnanungan, Quezon Province, Philippines bringing with it torrential rain and destructive winds. On November 12 in the morning, residents of Metro Manila, Southern Luzon, and Central Luzon woke up to flooded roads and homes as the rain and winds continued to wreak havoc. This calamity comes only two weeks after Super Typhoon Rolly (Goni) devastated the Bicol region, causing the deaths of at least twenty people.
The foundations of their houses were critically damaged from the rising waters. Fallen limbs and trees smashed cars and roofs all across the cities. Most of the areas in the Province of Cagayan and Marikina City were flooded and their homes that were left standing need to be completely gutted due to the risk of mold.
In partnership with The Integrative Center for Alternative Development (ICAD) Foundation, which instituted Fountain International School, Academia Language and Review Center in Metro Manila and the Filipino Turkish Tolerance School in Zamboanga City, respectively, we have successfully collected enough donations to provide immediate relief to the victims.
We were able to distribute 100 care packages to the victims of the typhoon. Thank you so much for your unending support and gratitude!
Thank you so much to Sky Academy Student Association, in cooperation with Embrace Relief and Peace Island Youth Academy, for raising $1,500 during their Thanksgiving Food Drive and providing thanksgiving dinner to at least 30 low-income families. We are so grateful for all your efforts and taking the time from your holiday season to give back. You’ll surely inspire a lot of people from your generation.
Since 2018, we have been working closely with the F.B.I. Academy Alumni Association for Newark, New Jersey to bring educational supplies and opportunities to students worldwide. In 2018, we collected and donated school supplies such as notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, scissors, crayons, highlighters, and glues sticks to students in Little Falls, NJ. In 2019, we donated 300 backpacks filled with 2 notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, a glue stick, sharpener, and rulers to students at the Mt. Bethel Church of God in Trenton and Newark, NJ. In 2020, we raised $12,000 to bring internet connectivity to three schools throughout New Jersey. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students around the globe had to attend school from home, but many did not have the ability to connect online. $4,000 was evenly distributed among Irvington, Clifton, and Wildwood New Jersey to bring internet access to children in need. The benefits of education for individuals and the society at large is insurmountable. Providing students the tools they need to learn allows them to focus on the lesson plans being taught because they do not have to worry about
This water well is in Memory of Ahmet Burhan Atac, an 8-year-old Turkish boy who lost his life to cancer. This terrible ordeal happened while his father was in jail and his mother was being tried on fabricated charges. This illustrates the gravity and extent of blatant violations of fundamental human rights in Turkey.
The death of Ahmet Burhan Atac reveals the plight of children caught up in Turkey’s massive purge.
We would like to remind everyone that these innocent people will not be forgotten forever!
Thank you so much for the Tayfa Team for raising $5,100 and sponsoring cataract surgeries for 51 grateful Malians. We are so thankful for supporting our #CureCataracts program.
Every day, the refugee crisis happening around the world becomes more and more dire. Thousands of refugees are seeking asylum, specifically Turkish refugees fleeing to Greece to seek safety and refuge. These refugees flee from violence, war, political, and religious persecution. They have no choice but to uproot their lives and relocate in hopes of finding a better life and future for their children and family. These refugees are in critical need of assistance and help to learn a completely new way of life in order to not only survive, but to also thrive.
Right now, there are thousands of displaced families fleeing from Turkey to Greece. Upon arrival, they are put into refugee camps for a few weeks. After this, they often displaced again with nowhere to go. The thought of not having a place to call “home” breaks their hearts, as it does ours. Together with our partner Turkish American Society of Ohio-Columbus (TASO), Embrace Relief is calling upon those who have a humanitarian spirit to help provide emergency housing. This housing is often temporary because the refugees flee to other European countries.
The number of displaced refugee families rises every single day and is expected to increase in the coming months. Refugees arrive in Greece with nothing and face the daunting task of finding a place to stay. Furthermore, available jobs are scarce and often impossible to come by, so it is difficult for families to save money or gain capital.
Due to the gracious donors and volunteers, we are able to provide emergency housing, food, healthcare, financial, psychological, and legal support to those who need it most. We now offer English courses to these Turkish refugees through our English Language Conversational Partnerships program. Many want to learn English because it is a prominent language in Europe and around the world, just in case they want or have to migrate to a different country.
We know that this year has been full of surprises. We didn’t expect to be hit by a pandemic and be on lockdown for more than half of 2020. And despite this unprecedented time, we still all came together as one to help people in need who were greatly affected by the coronavirus. We showed that no matter what challenges come our way, we will always be united to help one another.
As the holiday season is coming, we want to start a campaign focusing on the people who are always excited the most about the holidays, the children. Children are one of the most affected populations of this pandemic. Especially children in the vulnerable areas of the world, they don’t have the privilege of having easy access to clean water and hygienic supplies which are crucial to combat the coronavirus, nor the luxury of having three or more meals in a day. They had to adapt to this new challenging norm on top of already having their everyday struggle.
We want to reach children in the most vulnerable areas and provide them with one of the most essential necessities, FOOD. According to Our World in Data, 22% of children younger than five are ‘stunted’ – they are significantly shorter than the average for their age, as a consequence of poor nutrition or repeated infection. In addition, Food For Lifestated that 1 in 6 children (100 million) in developing nations is underweight and 1 in 4 of the world’s children are stunted. And across the globe, 50.5 million children are estimated to be underweight for their height.
With your holiday spirit and generosity, we are planning to send food packages to children in Greece, Yemen, Tanzania, Congo, Kenya, and Uganda. You can also make these children happy for a year by supporting their orphanages with monthly donations. We are kindly asking for your help to make these children feel that they are remembered and seen this holiday season.
