Honor Thy Mother

This Sunday marks Mother’s Day. If nothing else, many mothers hope to sleep in and not have to make breakfast. Some can expect bouquets of flowers, endearing cards, baskets of fruit or chocolate. At a minimum, many will receive the well wishes and affection of their children. There are any number of ways to show your mother your love and appreciation. This Mother’s Day, Embrace Relief offers you yet another method, one which will make a difference. In honor of your mother, we ask you to consider making a donation to improve the lives of those in the developing world. Through Embrace Relief’s Mother’s Day 2019 campaign, donors may bestow one of two gifts: The Gift of Sight Worldwide, over two million people suffer from cataracts and related complications. $120 is all it costs to restore someone’s sight. Contributions help mobilize physicians, so they can conduct cataracts surgeries, as well as routine health screenings. The Gift of Hope According to a survey conducted by Unicef, 9 million orphans reside in Sub-Saharan Africa. These vulnerable children are deprived of affection, adequate nutrition and an education, all of which are necessary for proper development and a productive future. Contributions to this branch of the campaign will go toward basic needs, medical services and providing an education. You could show your mother no greater recognition than by expanding opportunities for those in need in her honor. Furthermore, these projects promote several of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Namely, they advance Goals 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-Being, Quality Education and Clean Water and Sanitation, respectively. Together, we will improve the lives of mothers and children in the developing world. In so doing, they gain the means to attain self-sufficiency for themselves, their families and their communities. Youth Island NY 2017 & 2018 Trips

In 2017, Youth Island of New York traveled to Haiti where they taught English to local school children, completed various construction projects, and supplied three orphanages with food. The following year in 2018, the group traveled to Tanzania where they built a water well that continues to serve the village. They also refurbished an orphanage with donated beds, tables, chairs, toys and painted cartoons on the walls of the orphanage. Each year, in collaboration with Embrace Relief, Youth Island NY gathers a team of eight students and a mentor for international trips to administer humanitarian aid in the form of health screenings,  construction and food drives. In the summer of 2017, a team traveled to Haiti. During the trip, the students taught local children English and carried out various constructive activities. Besides supplying three orphanages with food, they helped them improve and maintain proper sanitary practices. A year later in Tanzania, they built a water well in a village experiencing water scarcity and assisted in the refurbishment of an orphanage. The volunteers donated and assembled new beds complete with pillows, sheets, blankets, as well as tables, toys and slippers. To brighten the children’s environment, they painted the walls with cartoon characters. This coming summer, they will bring their services to Uganda, where many residents are without access to basic healthcare services. While there, the team hopes to conduct screenings for 1,400 people, preventing diseases like malaria, HIV and diarrhea. In particular, they wish to improve the welfare of children. 4,000 people will also receive food packages. Youth Island NY relies entirely on donations to perform these services and so the group asks you to consider contributing to its fundraising campaign. Your contribution will feed families,  improve wellbeing and bestow aid recipients with the means to further their own development.

Youth Island 2019 Summer International Trip

This upcoming summer, Youth Island NY will be traveling to Uganda, which has one of the world’s worst healthcare records and a 39 percent undernourishment rate. Such conditions can lead to physical and cognitive stunting, as well as poor academic performance.  Comprised of eight students and a mentor, Youth Island conducts health screenings, water well construction and food drives. Previously, they have offered these services to needy residents of Haiti and Tanzania. However, the group relies on donations in order to deliver these services. Their needs are as follows:

Yemen Will Not Wait

Since 2015, the Yemeni Civil War has taken the lives of tens of thousands of lives. Violence is estimated to have killed an estimated 17,729 civilians. However, an ongoing famine, instigated and maintained by the conflict, remain the most dire threat faced by non-combatants. This famine has resulted in the deaths of over 50,000 children. Worse yet, the civil war shows no signs of abatement. Between estimates from Unicef and the UNHCR, roughly 24 million Yemeni, including 11.3 million children, face imminent starvation. Coupled with poor quality water, malnourished people are at greater risk of succumbing to cholera and diarrhea. The first three months of 2019 saw the emergence of nearly 109,000 suspected cases of those two aforementioned diseases. Complicating matters, these conditions have led to the displacement of 3.3 million people, the effects of which include reduced access to healthcare. Women and girls face even greater obstacles, such as increased risk of violence, exploitation, abuse and diminished access to basic healthcare services. Clearly, the Yemeni population needs immediate humanitarian aid from the international community. And you can help them. Refugees in Greece

For many refugees, Greece represented their last, best hope of safety and starting over. Approximately 50,000 refugees currently reside in camps across the country, awaiting approval of their asylum cases. Due to a host of factors beyond their control, refugees can expect to remain in those camps – where refugees face less than ideal conditions, such as overcrowding, poor sanitation, all manner of violence and deprivation of food, clean water and financial resources – for the foreseeable future. Embrace Relief has launched several successful campaigns to boost morale and deliver financial assistance to refugees in Greece. One such is their Adopt A Family campaign, which provides monthly stipends with the goal of establishing a measure of independence. Knowing that refugees have often been subjected to extensive trauma and duress, Embrace Relief offers counseling for those in need. The organization’s ultimate objective is to reduce the overall camp population and help refugees assimilate into the mainland. The monthly stipends may enable them to relocate. Through Embrace Relief, donors have fed many refugee families. All of which go a long way toward meeting the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goals 1, 2, 3 and 6: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health/Well-Being and Clean Water and Sanitation, respectively. Nonetheless, the refugee crisis continues, and consequently Embrace Relief’s efforts, remain ongoing.
