California Wildfire Disaster Relief

This week, Northern California experienced a record-breaking heatwave with nearly 12,000 lightning strikes in areas that have started wildfires and have caused burning homes and evacuation. So far, 1.66 million acres have burned, and 15,800 firefighters all the way from Florida and New Jersey are providing extra help. However, fire experts say that this year is especially dry, and they are just reaching the peak of the fire season. There are still at least two or three months left before the rain arrives.

Here are some updates from the SFGATE that the Cal Fire provided regarding the three largest wildfires burning in Northern California ever since Sunday, August 30th:

SCU Lightning Complex LNU Lightning Complex CZU Lightning Complex

Embrace Relief, in collaboration with Bay Area Cultural Connections and Pacifica Institute Northern California, plan to send emergency supplies and humanitarian aid to those who have been affected by these wildfires. Any donation amount, big or small, will help us bring humanitarian relief to those affected. Please join us in our mission to help those affected by these California Wildfires.

How Can You Help Yemen?

There’s been an ongoing conflict in Yemen since the end of 2014, which has resulted in the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Thousands of innocent Yemeni civilians have been killed and injured due to this civil war. More than 17,500 civilians have been killed and wounded since 2015, according to the Yemen Data Project, 20+ million people in Yemen are experiencing food insecurity, and 10 million are at risk of severe famine.  24.1 million Yemeni people require immediate humanitarian assistance. Since March 2015, 3.65 million have been internally displaced. Hundreds of people have also died due to the flash floods happening that ravish the country. They are among the most vulnerable to the pandemic. According to UNICEF, around 2 million children under five years old suffer from malnutrition. Before the pandemic, 2 million children were out of school due to conflict and poverty. Sadly, that number has increased to 7 million children currently not going to school. Furthermore, roughly 10% of Yemenis depend wholly on remittances. Yemen’s economy, already weak before the conflict, has been deeply affected. Thousands of families no longer have a stable income source, and many government workers have not received a consistent salary in several years. The country’s broken economy has intensified the humanitarian crisis.  The war has had a devastating impact on the lives of people living in Yemen. Millions of people don’t have the necessities needed to live due to limited food and fuel supplies, as well as buildings and roads being destroyed. Furthermore, they have no access to proper healthcare because their medical facilities shattered during the worst cholera outbreak, with 110,000+ confirmed cases in April. Consequently, it leads them to poor sanitation and the inability to get the needed treatment, which can cause a second deadly wave of COVID-19.  The health and safety of Yemeni people are in considerable threat. According to UNICEF, an estimated 12 million children are affected, which will worsen in lieu of the Coronavirus. There is no reliable documentation of COVID-19 cases in Yemen, and it’s believed to be an undercount due to limited testing ability.

Embrace Relief partners with local Yemeni charities to distribute food packages to help alleviate hunger and fight the widespread famine throughout the country. Each food package has 25 kg of wheat flour, 5 kg of rice, 5 kg of sugar, and 2 liters of cooking oil. These packages will be delivered directly to the doors of those in need. Each one of these packages costs only $50 – comparable to a night out getting dinner.  With everything going on in Yemen, you can be their silver lining during these uncertain and scary times. Show them that there is and will always be hope for them and that no matter what, their future will always be as bright as the sun. Please join us in our mission to help the Yemeni people and bring them the much-needed humanitarian aid they require by Clicking Here.

Hurricane Laura Disaster Relief

Hurricane Laura Brings Devastation to Louisiana

On August 27th, 2020, Hurricane Laura hit Louisiana and left a path of devastation and destruction. Hurricane Laura has caused at least six deaths, including a 14-year-old girl. These deaths occurred due to trees collapsing into houses throughout southern Louisiana.

Hurricane Laura brought winds upward of 150 mph and caused devastating damage to homes, businesses, historical landmarks, places of worship, schools, and more. A 20-foot flash flood storm surge wrecked Lake Charles, Louisiana, and neighboring counties. Furthermore, a chemical plant caught fire started in West Lake, Louisiana, causing harmful smoke to be released in the air, including “chlorine, nitric oxide, and other toxins used in industrial and commercial disinfectants and swimming pools maintenance,” according to The Washington Post.

Last September 13, Embrace Relief together with the help of the Atlas Foundation, International Relations Committee, and the Louisiana Organization of Refugees and Immigrants, distributed food packages to 100 families. They first visited the Lake Charles Fire Station and then dropped off the packages at the delivery site. From there, the donations were distributed to the victims of Hurricane Laura. In addition, Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, Mayor-President of the City of Baton Rouge and Parish of East Baton Rouge, was present during the distribution.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to all our donors for helping us make this mission a success!

Food Distribution In The Bronx

The Turkish Cultural Center New York, Embrace Relief, and New York State Senator Luis R. Sepulveda, Parkchester Family Pharmacy, American Bangladeshi Welfare Organization USA Inc. and Youth Island New York collaborated to distribute halal food packages to muslim families facing hunger in the Bronx in New York City. One in four residents in the Bronx alone face food insecurity. Halal food was distributed to the families since the population of this area is largely Bangali and Muslim.
